Bill Bowers coached the Hempfield boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams and the girls’ track team over a span of 33 years. His teams registered 1,100 wins, 182 losses and 2 ties for a winning percentage of 85.9.

Bowers’ boys’ cross-country teams were Lancaster-Lebanon champs four times, District 3 champs three times and PIAA runners-up twice.

Initiating the girls’ cross-country program, Bowers’ team won the L-L League meet nine times and District III meet twice. His girls’ track team won the L-L League meet 10 times, were District III champs twice and a PIAA runner-up once.

Bowers is a McCaskey HS (’65) and Millersville State College graduate (’70). At Millersville he owned two individual records (the 440-yard time and the 440-yard hurdles time) and he was part of four relay school records (44o, 880, shuttle hurdle and mile relay teams).

Bowers has received the George Kirchner Memorial Award for lifetime achievements in athletics.
