McCaskey track teams have a history of excelling. The boys and girls teams are coming off Lancaster-Lebanon League Indoor Championships. The girls finished second in the state. One of their stars is Ruby Garner-Valle, a long-distance runner who has set a school record in the 3,000-meter indoor event with a time of 9:54:49. She has her sights set on the outdoor season.
"I prefer outdoor track. I give my best effort. I try to chase after PR's (personal records) in the 1600 and 3200. I like to push myself individually, but it's nice being part of a team, where we can all run together for the same goal," Garner-Valle said.
She earned 2025 Lancaster-Lebanon League Cross Country Female Runner of the Year. One of her coaches, Tyler Real, said of her, "She's one of our top athletes, a natural athlete and leader. She works hard and leads by example." Real added, "She has many records to tackle and when all is said and done, Ruby will have them."
Garner-Valle says the running community has helped her make friends, and the sport develops discipline. "I like to get pushed and build through consistency. You can see the rewards. I run about six days a a week," she said.
Garner-Valle and her mother, Nadine, attended the Lancaster-Lebanon Spring Sports Media Day hosted by LNP | Lancaster Online at Penn Medicine park. Ruby likes to do most of her talking on the track, but she excels in a number of areas.
Nadine shared with the Lancaster County Sports Hall of Fame that Ruby won first place in the North Museum's Science and Engineering Fair in the Earth and Environmental Science category. She created a filter for contaminated water, to separate it.
Ruby, a junior, would like to study environmental engineering in college with a strong liberal arts curriculum. She likes math and German in school. In her immediate future, she hopes to conquer the science of long-distance running and help McCaskey to another track and field championship, setting those personal records along the way.
