Devin Wagstaff, a junior at Donegal, recalls with interest his attendance at a four-day conference in Indianapolis, stemming
from his Student-Athlete Leadership Program. The conference included high school athletes from throughout the United States. The theme focused on enhancing athletes’ group leadership skills and motivation, which Devin hopes to help him and others on his track team.
Devin competes in the sprints -- 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay. The 100m race is his favorite, with a personal record of 11.0 seconds. His 4x100m relay team set the Donegal school record last season with a time of 43.16 sec. This year he will run the relay with 3 new sprinters.
McCaskey’s sprinters, Devin forecasts, are a group he looks forward to running against. Donegal (Section 3) will face the
Tornadoes’ sprinters (Section 1) at the Hempfield Invitational Meet.
In the off-season, Devin trains with his brother, Davion, a Donegal alumus and Stevens College of Technology student. His favorite
training exercise is running “endurance conditioning,” where he sprints longer distances than the actual race he is training for -- he runs 180 meters at 80% effort to condition for the 100m race at 100%. This conditioning helps lower his times in competitive races.
Devin has high hopes for his boys team and hints at success for Donegal’s sprinter, Jayanna Morant, for the girls team. He says,
“She is good!”
Next year Devin plans to study to become an electrician at Stevens … and run track with his brother.
