Manheim Central's football team is finding plenty of motivation in last season's 3-7 record as they aim to return the program to its usual level of winning almost every week.
Players attending Media Day:
(from left)
Cooper Nied, senior, offensive and defensive lineman
Daniel Gertler, senior, offensive and defensive lineman
Jayvior Marales, senior, receiver, free safety
Cody Hess, senior, wide receiver, outside linebacker
The players agreed their goal is winning games, "bringing back Manheim to what everybody knows Manheim as, not a 3-7 team, but 10-0 and steamrolling everybody." says Gertler.
They expect the team to benefit from a shift away from two-way starters. "Coach (Dave) Hahn's big thing this year is one-way starters, focus on what you're strong at," says Hess. "so we have a lot more depth on the team."
The players look forward to going against West Philadelphia again this year as well as Warwick, Solanco and Cocalico in the league.
The team has been working hard on conditioning all summer, and these players will benefit from their other activities. Jayvior plays basketball and pole vaults and runs sprints in track. Nied throws shot, javelin and discus in track and he's doing archery. For Gertler it's hiking, art and journaling. Hess plays baseball and wrestling, but is getting serious about bowling.
"Cody's getting me into bowling," adds Jayvior, to which Nied adds he, too, has the bowling bug.
