Luke Trainer will never forget opening day 2021 for Millersville Marauders baseball.
In the first game of a doubleheader against Clarion, Trainer hit for the cycle. After popping to short in his first-inning at-bat, the senior catcher from Conestoga Valley had a grand slam in the second, an RBI single in the fourth, 2-RBI double in the fifth and RBI triple in the sixth. If you're counting, that's 8 RBI. Millersville won the 7-inning game 18-5.
In the second game, all Trainer did was an RBI single in the first, single in the third before being walked in the fourth of Millersville's 6-inning 8-3 win. That's 6-for-7, 12 total bases and 9 RBI for the day.
Millersville coach Jon Sheehan highlighted the rarity of the event in his tweet: "This is the first cycle I’ve ever seen in a Marauder uniform—20 seasons as a player, asst coach, and head coach. Unreal."
Sheehan pointed out that Trainer was a combined 8-for-8 with 8 RBI in the last two games of last year's pandemic-shortened season.
More important, the doubleheader sweep gave Millersville it's first 2-0 start since 2017, according to Bryan Kast, MU athletics communications graduate assistant.
