Bill was an All-American at both football and field and track at Franklin & Marshall College. On track & Field more specifically. the javelin he qualified for the 1948 Olympics, but did not make the Olympic team, as he finished sixth in the finals. In the NCAA Championships in 1947 and 1948 he finished in the top five for the javelin. In 1955 became the track & Field and Cross Country Coach at Franklin & Marshall College. His career cross country record was 217-54 and his track & field record 261-90. At one time his track teams had a streak 0f 88 consecutive dual meet victories. His track and field teams won Middle Atlantic Conference Championships in 1968, 1969, and 1981. His overall coaching record was 478-144.
