Boyd was the head football and track coach at McCaskey High School. Head football coach at McCaskey 1952 to 1968 and won Central Penn Football Championships in 1952, 1957, 1959, and 1960. His 1960 was one of the best teams in the state of Pennsylvania as they ended the season with a 9-0 record and only giving up 26 points all year. Boyd also coached with his brother Woody 1948 to 1951 at Franklin & Marshall College.  Woody Sponaugle was a little All American football player at Franklin &  Marshall College. He was the head football/basketball coach at F & M, and his football coaching record was 59-56-4, and his 1950 team went undefeated with a 9-0  record which was the first undefeated  Franklin & Marshall team in school history. In 1963 he left coaching to become athletic director at Franklin & Marshall. Woody was also head football, basketball coach at McCaskey High School before going to Franklin & Marshall.
