A boxing manager, trainer and long-time director of the well-known Finefrock & Stumpf Golden Gloves Center in Lancaster, Barry Stumpf has had success in the ring and provided a safe haven for thousands of youths in the Lancaster community.

Stumpf started out in boxing as a fighter. He was the YMCA Middle Atlantic Tournament champion in 1962 and ’63 and was named the outstanding boxer in 1963. Stumpf competed in the U.S. Amateur Boxing Bouts Junior League Division and the Olympic trials.

Stumpf started coaching in ’72-73. He opened his boxing center in 1974 and in 1980 he started the Central Pennsylvania Golden Gloves. His team has won 34 team titles over the years. He was the Pennsylvania Golden Gloves travel team coach from 1982 to 2020. The team won national titles from 2000 to 2005.

Stumpf is a four-time USA Boxing Coach of the Year and has been part of the U.S. Olympic coaching staff five times. He has trained boxers who have won over 50 Open-Class Golden Gloves titles.

Two of his most notable fighters are Leah Mellinger, 3-time junior welterweight world champion, and Fernando Rodriguez, a two-time national champion Golden Gloves champion in ’86 and ’87 who went 23-2 as a professional.

  • 1999 Canada Pan American Games (Mario Santiago earned silver medal)
  • 2000 USA Olympic alternate coach
  • 2001 Head coach USA World Cup games in Northern Ireland
  • 2003 Junior Pan American Games Dominican Republic (Israel Crespo won gold medal)

  • Red Rose Award Lancaster City for Community Engagement
  • National Golden Gloves Hall of Fame 2000
  • Pennsylvania Boxing Hall of Fame 2023
  • Lifetime Achievement Award from U.S. Olympic Boxing Training Center 2023
  • Mid-Atlantic Association of USA Boxing Hall of Fame 2016
